'My Babies': Woman Evicted After Hundreds Of Pet Rats Discovered In Home

We've heard of hoarding cats, but rats?

A Wisconsin woman was recently evicted from her home, after authorities found evidence she had been keeping hundreds of pet rats in her trailer.

Darlene Flatoff, 58, will be forced to find a new home after authorities found she has had up to 300 rats living with her since March, according to the Associated Press.

Inspectors who paid a visit to Flatoff's home in the town of Plover found evidence of "rodent infestation" and “inappropriate elimination of sewage," according to local news outlet Wausau Daily Herald.

Flatoff, a two-year resident of Birch Tree Estates mobile home park, was observed living among the rats and reportedly kissing them, according to the Herald.

Health officials trace the source of the problem to breeding between Flatoff's first few domesticated rats -- bought from a pet sotre -- and wild neighborhood rats, according to the AP.

The situation, now a public health hazard, has advanced to the point that authorities felt the only solution would be to raze the trailer, according to CBS local affiliate WSAW in Wausau, Wisc.

"The neighbors here are very upset about having this person here because they're always concerned about the rats going in their places," Miguel Lopez, manager of the Birch Tree Estates mobile home park, told WSAW.

Although she has already gotten rid of many of the rats, Flatoff told WSAW she doesn't know what to do next.

"They don't have diseases. They're sweet little babies," she said.
