Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday named his pick for former Alderman Sandi Jackson's successor on Chicago's City Council.

From an initial field of 53 applicants, Natashia Holmes, a former policy advisor for the Illinois Department of Transportation, has been selected to become Chicago's newest alderman, the Chicago Sun-Times first reported.

Most recently, Holmes worked as a project manager in public outreach and government relations for Metro Strategies Inc., according to her LinkedIn profile.

In a statement, the mayor said Holmes "will bring professionalism and a strong sense of the needs of the community to the position."

Emanuel also described Chicago's newest alderman as "a clear break from the past and a new beginning" for the ward, ABC Chicago reports. Her only previous political experience is running once for a school board.

According to previous reports, a four-member mayor-appointed commission of community leaders was slated to help Emanuel choose Jackson's successor in a process the mayor repeatedly emphasized would be an open and transparent one.

Sandi Jackson, who formerly represented the city's South Shore-area 7th Ward, abruptly resigned from her post last month despite previous denials that she would do so.

Last week, reports emerged that Jackson is now the subject of a federal investigation independent of the one her husband, former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., is currently mired in.
