Family Of AJ Boik, Aurora Shooting Victim, To Attend State Of The Union Speech In Washington D.C.

Posted: Updated:

While the Colorado House Judiciary Committee was battling over two gun control bills, the family of slain Aurora victim AJ Boik have been getting ready to attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech in Washington D.C.

Boik was just 18 years old when he was killed in the July 20 Aurora movie theater shooting.

Theresa and Dave Hoover were both invited by Democratic U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette and Ed Perlmutter, who each provided them with their extra tickets. Boik's motherTheresa Hoover has tried to get an assault weapons ban since her son's death.

"It's almost healing to try and make a difference and hopefully prevent this from ever happening again. I can't imagine that it wouldn't pass. There is no reason for those assault weapons to be out there. No reason," Hoover said.

According to a report by CNN, there are expected to be at least 20 survivors of gun violence sitting in the crowd during the President's State of the Union speech, as organized by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group.

When he introduced his proposed Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 along with U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Perlmutter said:

I believe in the Second Amendment, and we have to protect the right to defend ourselves. I believe in liberty and rights of hunters, sportsmen, and personal defense gun owners. But we can't continue silently watching 30,000 deaths a year by guns and near-monthly mass shootings in places we should feel most safe. Every day, families - like the ones impacted in Aurora --and in my neighborhood, in the grocery store, and who call my office are asking for solutions to the heartbreaking problem of gun violence.

The family members of eight Aurora victims responded in support of the Assault Weapons Ban bill, and the Hoovers had even planned to be in D.C. on Tuesday already with the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group.

On her Facebook page earlier Tuesday, Congresswoman DeGette wrote:

Tonight I will be particularly proud to join with my friend Rep. Ed Perlmutter to bring loved ones of the victims of the Aurora shootings to hear firsthand from President Obama his commitment to keeping killing machines out of the hands of those intent on doing harm. We can never heal the pain of their loss, but we can pay tribute to their loved ones by working together to prevent more families from facing the same tragedy.

The Aurora theater shooting left 12 people dead and 70 others wounded.
