A Maryland mother is accused of smothering her 2-year-old daughter to death and claiming that she did so because the girl was "cursed."
Chelsea Michelle Booth, 25, allegedly told police on Feb. 7 that she killed Kassidey Capri Booth because Kassidey's father, Antwon Nelson, had placed a "Muslim curse" on her, ABC 2 reported. She allegedly added that the girl was possessed by an evil spirit.
Nelson told investigators he had not seen his daughter in several months.
Annapolis Police had received a call on Feb. 6 from a neighbor who was concerned that the toddler hadn't been seen in several days, according to CBS Baltimore. Investigators located the child's body among garbage that was on the way to a landfill.
Officials believe that Booth murdered her daughter by "laying on top of her and smothering her until Kassidey stopped breathing and showed no signs of life," according to a police report.
According to WJLA, police believe she killed the child a few days before the body was found.
She has been charged with first and second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse resulting in death.
Booth has another daughter, who is unharmed.
