Frances Colon Killed: 18-Year-Old Is Clemente High's Third Student To Die In Shootings This Year

High School Loses Third Student To Shootings This Year

An 18-year-old high school student with dreams of attending college was fatally shot Friday night in Humboldt Park.

Police say Frances Colon was found around 7 p.m. in the 1100 block of N Pulaski Road with a fatal gunshot wound to her back, reports DNAinfo Chicago. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m. according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

Honored several times as a "Student Of The Month" at Roberto Clemente Community Academy on the Ukrainian Village-Humboldt Park border, the Tribune reports Colon was the school's third student this year to die by gun violence this year.

"I'm sick of it," Clemente's principal Marcey Sorensen told the Tribune. "How many more kids have to die before we do something?"

Colon's death was the second in a violent weekend marked by one additional homicide and five non-fatal shootings — three of which occurred within a 90 minute period of Colon's killing.

Oscar Marquez, a 17-year-old Marine Math and Science Academy junior, was shot to death in Little Village near Western and Cermak Saturday evening around 6:15 p.m.; his 18-year-old cousin was wounded and recovering at an area hospital, reports the Sun-Times.
