Maggie Smith Talks To '60 Minutes' About Playing The Dowager Countess On 'Downton Abbey' (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

On the night of the Season 3 finale of "Downton Abbey" in the US, Dame Maggie Smith sat down for a rare interview with "60 Minutes." While Smith admitted that she's never seen a single episode of "Downton Abbey," that doesn't mean she's not hugely supportive of the show, as well as enjoying her role on the period drama.

Though American audiences are still a year out from the start of Season 4, Smith was already contemplating the future of the Dowager Countess.

"Logically, Violet must be about 100 and something now, so I don’t know how she’s gonna last," she said.

As for her character dying, Smith indicated that there appears to be no intention of the writers ever doing that, though she thinks it might have to happen at some point. If it does, though, it won't be because she's wanting to quit. Smith said she has no plans to retire and she'll continue playing the grumpy family matriarch for as long as she can.

Fans can catch Maggie Smith on the big screen in "Quartet," in theaters now. "60 Minutes" airs every Sunday at 7 p.m. EST on CBS.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
