"The Good Wife" continues to slide in the Nielsen ratings on Sunday nights, but series co-creators Robert and Michelle King aren't sending up the rescue flares just yet.
According to TV By the Numbers, the Sunday, Feb. 17 episode of "The Good Wife" had 8.5 million viewers and a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, a series low. However, it's still better than a lot of other broadcast shows ... but by CBS standards it could be seen as troubling. BuzzFeed asked the Kings about the show's ratings struggle, but Michelle said she doesn't worry about the numbers because they're out of their control.
"I worry about making good episodes. The best episodes we can. And that's it. That's where I worry," Michelle said.
According to Robert, CBS Studios and CBS the network express happiness in how "The Good Wife" is doing. "They're very appreciative -- and fans, if I can say it," Robert told BuzzFeed. "We're smart and sly enough to know when you're on the downward slope, and that's where people have suggestions about what you should be doing: Don't do this, try this, don't do that. And we're not getting that. We trust that they're real fans, and they really like it, and they want us to continue doing it. They'll have to carry us out of our offices!"
As mentioned, "The Good Wife" is a production of CBS Studios, increasing its chances for a Season 5 renewal, but its sinking numbers certainly have it on the bubble. When Season 4 ends, "The Good Wife" will be close to hitting 100 episodes, a key ingredient to syndication success. The prestige factor will likely keep the series around for another year -- but there could be a timeslot change or a reduced episode count.
