Elizabeth Colbert Busch Bowls, Campaigns With Brother Stephen (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

Elizabeth Colbert Busch and her brother, comedian Stephen Colbert, hosted supporters of her campaign for South Carolina's First Congressional District at a trio of fundraisers over the weekend, knocking down pins and serving up hot breakfast.

The busy weekend began in New York City at a $5,200-a-plate fundraising dinner to kick off her quest for the seat vacated by Tim Scott, who was appointed to the Senate earlier this year. Colbert Busch and her brother later traveled down to Charleston, S.C., where they held a number of campaign events.

On Saturday, the two held a bowling party in Charleston, where attendees were able get books signed by Colbert for an extra $1,000.

On Sunday the pair treated constituents to biscuits at a Sunday morning meet-and-greet. At the event, Colbert praised his sister for breaking the mold of political peculiarity sometimes on display in South Carolina.

"[People are] tired of crazy, how about just a sane, intelligent businesswoman? Doesn't that seem like a simple answer?" Colbert said. "She actually has skills and talents to offer people in public office -- I'm professionally ridiculous."

Colbert Busch has quickly emerged as a favorite to win the Democratic primary in March, after locking up endorsements from South Carolina politicians such as Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn. Republicans have fielded 16 candidates in their primary, among them former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who made national news in 2009 when he disappeared to visit his secret mistress in Argentina. At the time, he claimed he was "hiking the Appalachian Trail." Despite his baggage, Sanford is seen as a favorite in the heavily Republican district. The special election will be held in May.
