Amanda Haas believes families benefit from eating healthy, homemade meals together -- so she's made it her life's work to help them do just that.
The culinary school graduate and longtime recipe tester founded One Family One Meal to give parents the tools they need to encourage good eating habits and facilitate mealtime togetherness.
"One Family One Meal is really a philosophy about how you get your children eating what you eat for dinner every night," she says in the above clip from the new AOL/PBS documentary MAKERS.
That philosophy has its roots in her personal experience as a mother of two. When her first son was old enough that she could start cooking for him, she says, she got the idea to write recipes and record the foods he liked.
At first, she didn't think she could make her passion into a business -- but "I finally woke up one day and said, 'Why not? Why can't I do this? Of course I can do it,'" she recalls. "The second I kind of woke up and got in touch with my gut, [I realized], 'This is what I have to do with my life.'"
"The sooner we teach our children that what they put into their bodies really matters, and will affect the outcome of their lives, the better."
