The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to trade Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, as first reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. The deal can't be official until March 12.

Shortly after Glazer's tweet, Adam Schefter reported that, citing NFL sources, San Francisco agreed to deal Smith in exchange for draft picks.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported on Sunday that San Francisco had "expressed to others" that a trade for Smith had been "effectively complete." While La Canfora tweeted he didn't know the other team involved in the deal, Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com wrote that he heard at the NFL combine that "the Alex Smith-to-Kansas City Chiefs deal is all but done."

More from the Associated Press:

A person with knowledge of the trade tells The Associated Press that the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to acquire quarterback Alex Smith from San Francisco.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade does not become official until March 12, when the NFL's new business year begins.

It's the first big player move by Kansas City since Andy Reid took over as coach after being fired by Philadelphia.

Fox Sports first reported the deal.

Smith lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick after sustaining a concussion Nov. 11. Kaepernick played well, and coach Jim Harbaugh stuck with him even when Smith was healthy.

Kaepernick led the 49ers to the NFC championship and a close loss to Baltimore in the Super Bowl.
