There were two events surrounding the 2013 Oscars that are known for bringing out Hollywood's most fabulous and most stylish stars: the Independent Spirit Awards and the Vanity Fair Oscars Party. Celebrities that may have played it safe at the big awards show are generally a little more relaxed. The dresses are usually more daring, and as a result, more exciting, like Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence's jaw-droppingly gorgeous dress.

We saw lots of black dresses, which normally leave us wanting more, but this week, the ladies spiced things up with interesting textures and fun silhouettes (hello, Sharon Stone!) Then there were pops of color that pulled us out of the winter doldrums, if only momentarily.

Check out this week's best-dressed celebrities and keep clicking to see previous weeks' contenders. Then check out our roundup of the week's worst-dressed for a lesson in what not to wear.

  • Lily Collins in Stella McCartney

Outfits like this are why Collins' has become known as a discerning fashionista. Her black dress may seem simple at first, but it's the unconventional cut and leopard print heels that make it stand out. We are also obsessed with her retro-inspired hair. London, August 19th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Jennifer Aniston in Alexander McQueen

It looks like Ms. Aniston is back in our good graces this week in her favorite color. This peplum dress not only flatters her figure, but the leather detail helps to define her waist and brings a little edge to an otherwise safe ensemble. Berlin, August 15th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Katie Aselton in Zara and Balenciaga

This is how you mix high and low. Not only do the two pieces in completely different price ranges look like one ensemble, but the interesting lines on the crop top help to amp up Aselton's plain skirt. Hollywood, August 15th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Emma Willis in & Other Stories

This is a great graphic print dress. The pattern is interesting and the colors are amazing against her light eyes and dark hair. Borehamwood, August 19th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Olivia Wilde in Theyskens Theory

Okay, Olivia Wilde may have found the perfect dress. The proportions are amazing (fitted up top, voluminous down below), the color is great against her tanned complexion and it looks like the dress has been fitted to her body perfectly. Not to mention her delicate strappy heels and tousled waves complete the look. New York, August 19th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Mayim Bialik in Karen Millen

Getting dressed as an observant Jew in Hollywood can be tricky -- so many garments are short, tight and revealing. But here, Bialik manages to look stylish and sophisticated. The geometric print on her dress provides some visual interest, while her strappy shoes give her look a little bit of sass. Universal City, August 19th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Christina Hendricks in Badgley Mischka

There is a reason that LBDs are so popular and Hendricks shows us why. Not only is this dress slimming, but it also showcases the actress' curves in all their glory. We also love the lace cap sleeves which add a vintage touch. Universal City, August 19th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Taryn Manning

Well this is a 180 from Manning's character Pennsatucky on "Orange Is the New Black." The actress looks quite polished in a coral dress, yet impossibly cool in her metallic pumps. Universal City, August 19th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Anna Wintour in Lanvin

It's nice to see the Vogue EIC out of a skirt suit and donning a bright color. Her modest dress highlights her toned arms, while her statement necklace is the perfect way to draw attention towards her face and that signature bob. New York, August 20th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Erin Heatherton in Toni Maticevski

The Victoria's Secret model is certainly putting the chic in geek. Though her white lace, high neck dress is beautiful, it's her sexy glasses that steal the show. We love how unexpected they are on the red carpet, especially when paired with a red lip. Sydney, August 21st Photo Credit: Getty

  • Tina Fey in Reed Krakoff

We've become so used to seeing Tina Fey in weird costumes and casual duds that seeing her in a dress is a little jarring (in the best way). The color blocking on this frock is both flattering and fashion-forward. A+, Fey. New York, August 21st Photo Credit: Getty

  • Olivia Wilde in Osman

We are "wilde" for this look. The actress' ensemble is uncomplicated: The cut of the dress is simple, the color scheme is monochromatic and her accessories accentuate her look without drawing attention away from it. New York, August 1st Photo Credit: Getty

  • Kate Hudson in Antonio Berardi

Hudson is on fire lately and this is just the latest in her sartorial successes. Her white dress fits her body like a glove, and the halter neckline draws attention toward her toned arms and glowing complexion. New York, July 31st Photo Credit: Getty

  • Kathy Griffin

It was a nice surprise seeing Griffin on the best-dressed list this week. We love how she picked this fitted, embellished gown and paired it with minimal accessories. It was a nice departure from her over-the-top ensembles. Santa Monica, August 1st Photo Credit: Getty

  • Vanessa Lachey in Proenza Schouler

This outfit proves how great a simple black tank and printed skirt can be. The texture of Lachey's skirt adds just the right amount of visual interest, while her metallic strappy shoes add just the right amount of sparkle. West Hollywood, August 1st Photo Credit: Getty

  • Diane Kruger in Mary Katrantzou

Everything about this look screams perfection. Between the expert power clashing on her dress (which has become somewhat of a Kruger signature) to her strappy heels and tousled waves, this outfit reads fashion-forward without looking like she is trying too hard. • Kerry Washington in Giambattista Valli

It's no surprise that Vanity Fair's best-dressed star of the year made our list this week. Her mixed patterned dress is a nice change on the red carpet, while her neutral pumps and high bun help keep her frock the focal point. Beverly Hills, August 4th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Naomi Watts in Thakoon

This is an amazing jumpsuit. It has an ideal cut that's not too loose, but close to the body, while the sheer lace detailing amps up the ensemble. Watts was smart to keep the rest of her look simple with black heels and minimal jewelry. New York, August 5th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Teri Hatcher in Chagoury

Strapless gowns can be so elegant, especially when they fit properly like Hatcher's. Her metallic dress flatters her hourglass shape, while her matching shoes really ties the ensemble together. Hollywood, August 5th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Priyanka Chopra in Maya Crispen

Miss World 2000 looked breathtaking in this light pink jumpsuit with metallic gold accessories. Her '20s-inspired hairdo gave a bit of edge to an otherwise feminine look, while her red lipstick married her coiffed locks and dainty ensemble. Hollywood, August 5th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Fan Bingbing in Elie Saab Couture

The Chinese actress looked stunning in this Elie Saab gown. The delicate embellishments paired perfectly with the dress' light blue and nude color scheme, while the tiering at the bottom added another level of intricacy, rendering the look a design marvel. • Lily Collins in Valentino

Black and white dresses are huge right now, and Collins executed the trend perfectly. She opted for a fitted dress with lace detailing (always a classic) and echoed the neutral color palette in her shoes, tying everything together. New York, August 7th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Kate Hudson in Balmain

What makes this look so successful is the expert proportions. The chunky embellishments weren't too heavy because of Hudson's exposed skin, and though the hemline was exceedingly short, it was well balanced-out by her conservative top. Hollywood, July 31st Photo Credit: Getty

  • Olga Kurylenko in Lorena Sarbu

White appears to be the color of the season. The model keeps a rather neutral look interesting by opting for a dress with embellishments and choosing feminine accessories. Los Angeles, July 25th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Kiernan Shipka in RED Valentino

If only all 13-year-olds were this well-dressed! Shipka is turning heads once again in a cute, textured white dress and a pair of trendy metallic heels. This young teen has a better fashion sense than most adults! Universal City, July 27th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Sienna Miller in Dolce & Gabbana

This floral dress is perfect for mid-summer. It's easy and breezy while still being stylish. London, July 29th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Sonam Kapoor in Gucci

We're not sure where to start with this look, it's so perfect. The plunging, off-the-shoulder neckline creates a nice V-shape which is drawing our eye towards her glitzy necklace, thick brows and expertly coiffed hair, while the teal color is popping against her skin tone. • Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy

This is why we love Amanda Seyfried! She manages to pull off fashion-forward looks, while still looking timeless and elegant. The ruffles on this dress are offset by the sleek bodice, and her retro waves and red lipstick make this outfit an instant classic. New York, July 30th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Selita Ebanks

The model is a total smokeshow in this all-white look. The sheer element and cut-outs on her dress work so nicely because her frock is otherwise demure. We also love her sleek ponytail which is drawing attention towards her gorgeous face. Salzburg, July 30th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Sharon Stone

This dress is giving us major flashbacks to Stone's performance in the 1992 film "Basic Instinct," and let's just say, the woman is still white hot. New York, July 30th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Miranda Kerr in Wes Gordon

Head-to-toe orange can be tricky to pull off, so Kerr was smart to mix in a pattern. We also love how her animal print shoes are a subtle attempt at power clashing. Tokyo, July 18th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Kate Moss in Prada

This is how you dress up a black frock. Although Moss' belted LBD is pretty, it's her neon shoes and animal print clutch that take the look to another level. London, July 18th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Emily Blunt in Wes Gordon

The "Looper" star moved this ensemble into best-dressed territory with her unexpected footwear. Though many would play it safe and pair this wildly printed sheath dress with nude pumps, Blunt took a risk and added bold red shoes. San Diego, July 20th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Sandra Bullock in Roland Mouret

We're so used to seeing Sandra Bullock play the funny girl who gets stuck wearing strange get-ups, but here she looks so polished. This red dress looks amazing with her complexion and dark hair color, while the black paneling on the sides is very slimming. San Diego, July 20th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Anna Paquin in David Koma

Blondes look amazing in black (as proven here). This fit-and-flare dress takes a simple LBD up a notch with its leather trim and shiny embellishments. San Diego, July 20th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Zoe Saldana in Balmain

We adore this jumpsuit on the "Blood Ties" star. It's dressy enough to wear to an event because of the chain-link straps, ruched bodice and expert tailoring. San Diego, July 20th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Scarlett Johansson in Versace

'Tis the season to wear neon and floral, and ScarJo does it well. Her busy dress paired perfectly with black pumps and beachy waves -- simple accents that didn't deflect attention from her natural beauty. San Diego, July 20th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Emma Hemming in Roland Mouret

The British television presenter and former model showed off her trim figure in this skintight turquoise dress. The cap sleeves, slicked back bun and sleek heels scream Hollywood glamour. London, July 22nd Photo Credit: Getty

  • Helen Mirren in Jenny Packham

All hail, Dame Helen Mirren! The Academy Award winner hit it out of the park in this red Jenny Packham dress. Not only does it fit her body like a glove, but it has the perfect amount of sex appeal. We also love how she paired the bedazzled dress with diamond accessories and nude pumps -- so timeless and elegant. London, July 22nd Photo Credit: Getty

  • Kate Middleton in Jenny Packham

There is no doubt that this dress will go down in history. The polka dot Jenny Packham dress with cap sleeves, an empire waist and pintucks at the collar was relaxed enough for the new mom, yet sophisticated enough for the prince's grand debut. We're not surprised that Packham's website crashed with people trying to get their hands on this design. London, July 23rd Photo Credit: Getty

  • Naya Rivera in Michael Kors

We can't stop staring at this outfit. It's flawless. The actress shows off her toned arms in this perfectly-fitted, strapless pink dress. We also love how she threw on a pair of metallic pumps to make the look fashion-forward. Giffoni Valle Piana, July 24th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Nicole Richie in Balmain

This is a very successful attempt at power clashing. The vertical stripes on Richie's pants elongate her legs, while their neutral color provide a nice contrast to her printed top. Los Angeles, July 10th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Kelly Ripa

Nude pumps and floral dresses are a great combination. The neutral-colored shoes don't compete with Ripa's printed dress, making this a clean and fresh summer look. New York, July 10th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Emmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera

The "Beautiful Creatures" star hit a home run with this dress. She balanced out the full printed skirt with a solid fitted bodice, and showcased her long arms with a sleek updo. New York, July 10th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Catherine Zeta-Jones in Maria Lucia Hohan

Va-va-voom! This is one sexy look. The "Broken City" star highlighted her toned arms and beautiful collarbone in this strapless gown. We also like how the long train on the dress is broken up with lace detailing and a high slit. Los Angeles, July 11th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs

Finally, Miley gets it right! Although she's combining a lot of different trends (crop tops, bold stripes and sporty finishes), it works because she has picked a figure-flattering silhouette and a neutral palette. New York, July 15th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Giuliana Rancic

This ensemble goes to show that a dress can be amazing because of fit. The "E! News" anchor shows off her trim figure in a LBD that hugs her curves in all the right places, while her strappy heels add just the right amount of visual interest. New York, July 15th Photo Credit: Getty

  • Stacy Keibler in Christian Siriano

A patterned high-waisted skirt is a great way to dress up a plain black T-shirt. George Clooney's ex played up the white in her skirt with a pair of matching pumps and injected a little fun into her ensemble with an animal print belt. New York, July 17th Photo Credit: Getty
