Weekend Box Office: 'Jack The Giant Slayer' Opens To Disappointing Numbers

Posted: Updated:
"Jack The Giant Slayer" had a rough opening.

It was a tough weekend at the box office for "Jack the Giant Slayer." The reboot of the classic "Jack and the Beanstalk" tale led a quiet weekend, opening to $28 million at 3,525 theaters. With a production budget of $195 million, "Jack the Giant Slayer" needed a much stronger opening. The film is on pace to follow in the footsteps of 2012's big budget bomb, "John Carter." Opening in March of 2012, "John Carter" made $39 million in its first week, reaching a total domestic gross of $73 million over the duration of its box office run. With a production budget of $250 million, the box office earnings were inadequate.

Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy's comedy, "Identity Thief," took the number two spot behind "Jack," breaking the $100 million mark this weekend. The film made $9.7 million across 3,230 theaters, bringing its total domestic gross to $107.4 million.

Also opening this weekend was comedy "21 and Over" and horror film "The Last Exorcism Part II," taking the number three and four spots, respectively. "21 and Over," which stars Justin Chon and Skylar Astin, made $9 million across 2,771 theaters. The film, which had a budget of $13 million, received a B CinemaScore from moviegoers. "The Last Exorcism Part II" brought in $8 million at 2,700 theaters this weekend. The sequel to 2010's "The Last Exorcism" has received harsh reviews from critics.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's latest, "Snitch," took the number five spot. The drama made $7.7 million across 2,511 theaters this weekend. The film has made $24.4 million since its release.
