What sort of person drives off after hitting a young child? Detroit Police are looking to answer that very question after a hit-and-run driver killed a boy on the city's east side on Sunday afternoon.
10-year-old Christopher Sandoval was struck and killed by a truck that went up over a curb while he was taking out the trash in front of his home Sunday near 8 Mile and Kelly, WXYZ reported.
According to police, the driver drove around a corner and then stopped to remove the boy's trash can that had gotten stuck under his tires. After dislodging it, the man drove off.
The suspect has been described as a white man in his 40's who was driving a red pickup truck -- possibly a Dodge with a snowplow attached, according to WWJ News.
Harper Woods and Eastpointe police are cooperating with the Detroit Police Department to find the suspect, the Detroit Free Press reports.
In January, a driver fled the scene of an accident in Dearborn Heights, Mich. after hitting and seriously injuring a pedestrian at Telegraph and Van Born roads.
Drivers who are involved in an auto accident in Michigan are required by law to stop and give their contact information to a police officer or the person or occupants of a vehicle they have struck.
Fleeing the scene after a fatal accident is a felony that can carry a penalty of up to 15 years and fines of up to $10,000.
