More than half of American women are the breadwinners in their households, but women still earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. This wage gap starts right out of college, is highest on Wall Street and stagnates during times of economic trouble.
In other words, the workplace gender gap is far from gone, and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg says individual women have the power to change it. In her new book "Lean In," which will be released on March 11, Sandberg calls for women in all occupations to "lean in" to their careers. In chapters on the leadership ambition gap, the myth of "having it all" and how much women should reveal about their personal lives at work, Sandberg enjoins women to recognize the ways in which they hold themselves back and push past their fears.
The book already has many critics and defenders. As of Wednesday, it has a whole foundation and online social network dedicated to putting the ideas it contains into action. And it has a lot of lines that have stayed with us in the weeks since we read our advance copies.
