A London tube station is bringing the 'Mind the gap, please' recording back -- all because a widow missed hearing her husband's voice.

Studio engineer Peter Lodge recorded the iconic phrase back in the 1960s, and the recording played in the London Underground for decades after, the BBC reported. However, technological advancements led to newer versions of the phrase being played at stations across the London Underground.

But one platform of the Northern Line at Embankment station continued playing the original well past the others, the Sun reported. It finally replaced its recording last year.

Then, according to writer Mark Mason, City Hall received a heartbreaking letter from Lodge's widow. She had taken to visiting the station to hear the voice of her late husband.

"We were very touched by her story," London Underground director Nigel Holness told the Metro newspaper. The Embankment station plans to restore the message.

London Underground staff even tracked down the recording and put a copy on a CD for the widow to keep.

Mason thanked the widow on his blog, writing: "Here's to your late husband, and the icon he created."
