This week's Family Dinner Table Talk, from HuffPost and The Family Dinner book:

March is Women’s History Month. The National Women's History Project has declared the theme for 2013 to be “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics" -- and this year, in addition to honoring women who have made strides in STEM, we get to commemorate a significant anniversary. On March 3, 1913, exactly 100 years ago this week, a group of women marched in Washington, D.C., to demand their right to vote. The parade was one of the first major efforts of the women's suffrage movement to capture national attention, showing the male politicians in Congress that female activists would fight until their voices were heard. Ultimately, they won with the passage of the nineteenth amendment, affirming women's right to vote.

Tonight, let’s talk about the progress we have made toward equality as a society, and the importance of knowing our history.

Questions for discussion:
  • Who are some female role models that you look up to?
  • Why do you think it took as long as it did for women to get the right to vote?
  • What are you doing, in school or as a family, to celebrate Women's History Month?

In her cookbook, The Family Dinner, Laurie David talks about the importance of families making a ritual of sitting down to dinner together, and how family dinners offer a great opportunity for meaningful discussions about the day's news. "Dinner," she says, "is as much about digestible conversation as it is about delicious food."

We couldn't agree more. So HuffPost has joined with Laurie and every Friday afternoon, just in time for dinner, our editors highlight one of the most compelling news stories of the week -- stories that will spark a lively discussion among the whole family.
