Trey Johnson may be the first basketball player to have made a game-winning, buzzer-beating basket only to wish that time had instead run out.

As first reported by NewsOK, Johnson's Hugo High School basketball team was just seconds away from defeating Millwood in the Class 3A state quarterfinals when he scored on the wrong basket. With his team holding a one-point lead over Millwood High School and in possession of the ball in the final seconds of a boys' playoff game in Oklahoma, the Hugo High School guard took an inbounds pass. Rather than dribbling out the clock, Johnson inexplicably broke toward the wrong basket and made the uncontested layup to win the game for Millwood, 38-37.

"At first I thought I was confused as to what was actually going on, maybe Hugo was sealing the victory," wrote Bryan Terry, the photographer who covered the game for The Oklahoman. "Then I noticed all the blank looks on fans’ and players’ faces. After a moment the Millwood players’ and fans’ blank expressions turned into a celebration."

While most sports fans were marveling at the unusual nature of the play, Mike Koehler, a social media professional in Oklahoma City, reached out to Kevin Durant and a few of his Thunder teammates on Twitter about lifting Johnson's spirits. Koehler also tweeted at Chris Webber, a player who is no stranger to high-profile errors late in key games but who also went on to an impressive NBA career after his infamous NCAA gaffe.
