Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist made a strong case for save of the year on Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres.
Twelve minutes into the first period, Lundqvist was challenged by Buffalo's top scorers in a wild sequence when Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh failed to clear the puck from the defensive zone. After Lundqvist made a save against Sabres captain Jason Pominville, Vanek got the rebound and fired another. But Lundqvist executed a quick sprawling save that kept the puck from finding the twine. The Rangers were unable to clear the zone as their star netminder made another save against Vanek with his skate while on his stomach.
Vanek would eventually have his revenge on a breakaway in the second period as Buffalo outscored New York 3-1.
