A group of confectioners made dreams a reality on Thursday by transforming a London home into a pop-up "cake hotel" filled with edible works of art. The stunt, a one-day-only event, was orchestrated by sugarcane brand Tate & Lyle Sugars to promote its new Taste Experience range of golden and brown cane sugars.
It took 14 cake makers more than 2,000 hours of baking, plus 900 hours to construct the hotel's many sugary elements. In all, more than 1,300 pounds of sugar were used for 2,000 macarons throughout the hotel, a rug made from 1,081 meringues, edible books, marshmallow garlands and countless other goodies.
Eight rooms in the so-called "Tasting House" were decked out in different styles inspired by regions from around the world, according to Emma Thomas, also known as Miss Cakehead, who helped coordinate the event.
They included a Mediterranean-inspired bathroom with a caramel popcorn-filled bathtub; a "Pirates of the Caribbean"-themed room with a large sugar treasure chest filled with ginger-spiced doubloons; a Mayan cellar with a fudge temple; a Mardi Gras room with a 5-foot-long rainbow cake; a Barbados-themed library with edible shells and hand-painted cookies; a Guyanese-inspired room with a realistic sea turtle cake; and a room paying homage to the South Pacific with a tall Easter Island statue made of chocolate mud cake.
The hotel, located on Dean Street in London's Soho neighborhood, was open to the public Thursday, and one couple was offered the chance to sleep at the hotel overnight.
