Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is a powerful leader who sits on the nation’s highest court. But the outspoken justice reveals her emotional side on a new episode of "Oprah’s Next Chapter" when she talks about one of the rare times she dissolved into tears, thanks to a life-changing phone call from President Barack Obama.
In this clip from the episode, Sotomayor recalls the exact moment President Obama called to tell her that she would be his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court. “I was in total disbelief when I was called that day,” Sotomayor tells Oprah.
“I don’t cry, [but] the tears started to come down my eyes,” Sotomayor says. “They just shot out. And my heart was beating so hard that I actually thought he could hear my heart.” Sotomayor says that, with the phone in her left hand, she took her right hand and placed it over her heart in an attempt to quiet it.
“It was the most electrifying moment of my life,” she says. “A moment in which you sit and realize that you’ve gone further than any dream you ever had, that you’ve reached something that never seemed possible. It is an overwhelming moment.”
