Jennifer Aniston hasn't appeared onscreen in over a year, but the actress could have her biggest role coming to theaters soon enough.

Aniston, who last led the 2012 flop "Wanderlust," stars in the untitled upcoming film based on the Elmore Leonard novel "The Switch." (The book is the first Leonard novel to feature Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara, characters made famous by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro in Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown," itself based on Leonard's "Rum Punch.") Aniston plays an abused housewife in adaptation and her performance is so powerful that it made the film's director emotional.

"It's the best work she's ever done and she’ll blow people away," director Daniel Schechter told THR in a new feature on the New York indie film scene. "I don't think people will see it coming, she's so talented and I was crying while watching it."

Schechter, who directed the well-received indie "Supporting Characters," amassed quite a cast his take on "The Switch"; Isla Fisher, John Hawkes and Mos Def also co-star.

"I'm enormously proud," Schechter told HuffPost Entertainment about the film. "John Hawkes and Yasiin Bey [Mos Def's real name] are incredibly deep thinkers. They read the book. They have their own personal life perspective. I don't think they're going to study what De Niro and Jackson did [in 'Jackie Brown']; they don't want to be doing any kind of imitation of those characters. But I cannot wait to see them together. I think it will be worthy of the amazing performances that De Niro and Jackson gave, for sure."
