1-Year-Old Boy Hit By Bullet While In Grandparent's Arms; $25,000 Reward Offered For Information (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

A 1-year-old child was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after being injured by bullet that entered the family's apartment window.

The boy, named Elijah, was being watched by his grandparents when a gunman began firing outside a Richmond, Calif., apartment building just after 1 p.m., according to ABC affiliate KGO.

Elijah was hit in the neck by a bullet fragment and rushed into emergency surgery at Children's Hospital Oakland, where his condition is now listed as stable.

"This shouldn't happen, my son didn't do nothing to nobody," Elijah's father Rosshan Ali told KGO. "As far as I know my mom was inside watching him. Like I said, my fiancé came home from work. She was in the shower, and next thing you know, shots fired and my mom grabbed him and ran into the kitchen."

Another person, apparently a bicyclist, was also hit during the shooting, according to CBS San Francisco. He reported to a nearby hospital shortly after the incident occurred, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

Quickly after the shooting, police converged on the western edge of the city's so-called Iron Triangle area, and officers searched for suspects using K-9 units and helicopters, according to the CBS San Francisco.

Speaking with reporters, Richmond police Chief Chris Magnus said a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the alleged shooter would be offered.

"We are not going to tolerate this in Richmond. ... This is completely unacceptable, and it's our highest priority to catch those involved," Magnus said, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

"You have a 1-year-old child that's literally in the arms of the grandparents there feeding him, and bullets come into the house," he said. "I am really angry about this. I am sickened. I am appalled."
