The fight for the right to represent the GOP in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District special election hit a peak moment of tension on Thursday.
Former Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) went after GOP challenger Curtis Bostic during the duo's debate, hitting the former Charleston County Councilman's attendance record.
North Charleston (S.C.) Patch reports that according to a review of Bostic's minutes, he was out of state, town or the country on nine occasions. Bostic shot back against Sanford's questions and those figures, explaining that his absences were due to to taking care of his wife, Jenny, who was ill with cancer.
"My absence is because I was home taking care of her largely, doing what I should've been," Bostic said, via footage from WIS-TV. "People knew where I was. I did my job just the same."
North Charleston Patch added that his son, Daniel Bostic, tweeted: "Not gonna lie - I'm still infuriated over Sanford attacking my dad for missing council when my mom was dying." As of Friday afternoon, the tweet was no longer on Daniel Bostic's account.
Sanford spent a good portion of Thursday's debate on the defensive, with Bostic charging that "a compromised candidate is not what we need." Sanford admitted that he "failed very publicly" regarding his extramarital affair and week-long disappearance as governor in 2009.
