Michel Richard National Gallery Of Art Menu: Russian, French Buffet Inspired By Diaghilev Exhibit

The National Gallery Of Art's New Celebrity Chef

WASHINGTON -- Washingtonians mourning Citronelle's temporary closure will delight at the latest delicious dish from the National Gallery of Art.

In association with the Gallery's upcoming exhibit Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, 1909–1929 (opening May 12), chef Michel Richard has created a Russian- and French-inspired menu for the West Building's Garden Cafe.

"The Ballets Russes period in Paris was full of creativity, and I took inspiration from traditional Russian menus to create dishes as modern as Diaghilev," Richard said in a statement released by the Gallery.

The buffet uses French ingredients in traditional Russian dishes like borscht and blini with caviar; wines from France and beers from the Czech Republic will also be available.

Richard is the latest in a string of guest chefs to grace the Garden Cafe. José Andrés created a Catalonian menu for last summer's exhibit Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape, and in 2011 Fabio Trabocchi's Garden Café Italia featured an à la carte menu inspired by Venice.

Michel Richard's Garden Café Ballets Russes menu will be available beginning May 7, Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4:00 p.m.
