NY Times Runs Instagram Photo On Front Page (PHOTO)

NY Times Makes Surprising Choice

The New York Times published an iPhone photo edited by Instagram on its Sunday front page.

The photo of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was taken by sports photographer Nick Laham. On his blog, Laham wrote that he took photos with his iPhone and an "actual" camera and posted the Instagram shots online. He wrote:

So yes. That was me in the locker room bathroom shooting portraits of the New York Yankees players with my iPhone. This was not my choice, I wasn’t given the option of studio or bathroom stall and decided on the latter. I joined the chain of photographers at 6am in the confines of the New York Yankees Spring Training facility in Tampa, and took what space I could get and worked with it. Below is a set of images shot with my iPhone and processed through Instagram.

Getty licensed the photo through its site. Business Insider wrote that the Times' decision to publish an Instagram photo threatened traditional photography. Poynter's Andrew Beaujon seemed to disagree, highlighting how Laham "is an accomplished sports portraitist who had access to the New York Yankees’ spring-training facilities." He added, "If his Yankees photos summon any larger narrative for photography, it may be how they’ve gotten out."

This is not the first time the New York Times published an iPhone photo on its front page. In November 2010, the paper ran a photo of a soldier in Afghanistan on its front page that was taken by New York Times photographer Damon Winter, who used the Hipstamatic application on his iPhone. Winter went on to win a prize in feature photography for his series of war photographs taken through the Hipstamatic application on his iPhone.
