Oprah recently went to the Bronx and sat down with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Being the first Latina and third woman to ever serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, Sotomayor is a big inspiration to women all over the world.
The interview is one of Sotomayor’s most revealing in that she talks about her father’s alcoholism, its impact on her growing up, why her marriage failed and the challenges of dating. She even admits that being a Supreme Court Justice is not the most fun she ever had, rather it was the life she left.
The Latina justice, who was raised in a Bronx housing project by her mother and father, told Oprah on Sunday night’s OWN show “The Next Chapter” about how she got to where she is today and about the certain promises she made to President Obama. She also talked about when she found out the president had nominated her and how it was the most electrifying moment of her life.
When Oprah asked her how she felt when hearing that President Obama was considering her, the Latina stated that she thought he was crazy.
“Not in a million years is he going to pick me… I was in total disbelief when I was called that day.”
She went on to describe that she got the call while at home, answered the phone and the president was on the other line telling her he had decided on her as his nominee to the United States Supreme Court.
Sonia Sotomayor’s most electrifying moment
“I don’t cry, and the tears just started to come down my eyes,” Sotomayor said. “It was the most electrifying moment of my life… fantasy yes, but a moment in which you sit and realize that you’ve gone further than any dream you ever had, that you’ve reached something that never seemed possible.”
Sotomayor went on to keep two promises to the president: first, to follow the advice of his team and second, to stay connected to her community. In regards to the second promise, her response was, “Mr. President, that’s an easy promise to make. I don’t know how to do anything else but.”
She mentioned how her community gives her strength and inspires her to keep going.
