Police are investigating the death of a newborn found abandoned in the bathroom of a suburban Chicago Popeye's restaurant Thursday.
Restaurant employees found the baby girl Thursday afternoon at a Popeye's on Sibley Boulevard in suburban Calumet City, Ill., reports NBC Chicago.
When police responded to the call, WGN reports they found the baby wrapped in a towel; police believe the baby's mother had just given birth in the bathroom.
NBC reports the Lake County coroner's office said in a release the baby — apparently born full-term — was about 15 minutes old.
Police are questioning a woman who checked into a hospital in south suburban Thursday after giving birth, the Tribune reports. The paper said a placenta was found in nearby Harvey, Ill.
The coroner's office identified the infant as "Baby Jackson" with an address listed in the Chicago suburb of Homewood.
EMS workers were unable to revive the child, who was pronounced dead at about 3:30 p.m. at a Hammond, Ind. hospital.
