Former Arizona state Rep. Terri Proud (R) said Wednesday that she believes Gov. Jan Brewer (R) "overreacted" after Proud made controversial remarks and was fired from her state government job, the Associated Press reports.
Proud made some strong remarks Tuesday surrounding her beliefs about women's ability to serve in combat roles in the military. Shortly thereafter, she was fired from her position with the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services.
Proud's supervisor, Director of the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services Joey Strickland, was then forced to resign. Strickland had hired Proud to coordinate a female veterans conference, despite being warned by Brewer's office not to hire the controversial state representative.
“If the governor has it out for me, or has something against former legislators finding jobs, then I was not aware of it until now,” Proud said. “Strickland should not have been removed, Brewer overreacted.”
Proud told the Arizona-Sonora News Service Tuesday that women may be less suited to serve in combat because of their menstrual cycles.
“Women have certain things during the month I’m not sure they should be out there dealing with," Proud had said. "I don’t know how to address that topic in a very diplomatic manner."
