The 254-kilometer race known as the Paris-Roubaix has been referred to by riders as the "The Hell of the North" for its "poorly maintained" course, according to tacx.com. But French rider Yoann Offredo found out that even the flat part of the competition can be just as unforgiving, especially when you don't pay attention to the signs ahead.

On Sunday, 26-year-old Offredo clipped a small sign that sent him flying over his handlebars and into the pavement. An official tended to Offredo on the side of the road and he was unable to finish the race, per The Telegraph.

Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara eventually won the race for the third time after earning the honor in 2006 and 2010.
