Races and fun runs to raise money for charity continue to be popular and engender a lot of good will, but the amount of money they bring to philanthropic causes doesn't always add up to much at the finish line.
Events with names such as Turkey Trot, Jingle Ball Runs and Shamrock Shuffle are "woefully inefficient ways to raise funds," says Sandra Miniutti of New Jersey-based non-profit rating service Charity Navigator. "They're more about brand awareness."
