Dolls Without Makeup, By Nickolay Lamm

Last week we shared Eddi Aguirre's illustration of Barbie without makeup -- and it's safe to say that we were all surprised by how different she looked.

So much so that artist and researcher Nickolay Lamm felt that Aguirre's representation might have taken it a little too far. "The viral Barbie photo completely over exaggerated the extent of how Barbie would look like without makeup," he told the Huffington Post in an email.

Lamm worked with another artist named Nikolett Mérész to create their own series of illustrations depicting Barbie and Bratz dolls without makeup. The pair used Photoshop to give the dolls a natural, bare-faced look. The results? The dolls still look unnaturally pretty, courtesy of their strange proportions, but much closer to human. Lamm first published one of the images, of Barbie without makeup, on MyVoucherCodes.co.uk.

"If dolls look good without makeup, what's the point of putting makeup on them in the first place?" Lamm asked in his email.

Great question.
