iPhone thefts are becoming more and more common. Reunions between owners and phone, however, are harder to come by, and usually only happen with the help of police.
But one Port St. Lucie, Fla. teenager took the task of retrieving his stolen property into his own hands, with the help of an unconventional source: Facebook.
Nicholas Douglas, a Treasure Coast High School sophomore, left his phone inside an unlocked gym locker when it was taken, according to WPBF 25 News.
"I do remember at the beginning of the year they told me to watch out, people do steal phones," Douglas told the station. With no direct leads, school authorities were not of much help to Douglas initially, so he decided to track down the thief on his own.
Douglas started his search at a Treasure Coast tech-trading page on Facebook and was surprised to find a fellow student trying to sell an iPhone shortly after the incident. Avoiding direct confrontation, Douglas used a friend's profile to arrange a meeting with the thief under the premise of buying the phone back. A school officer who accompanied Douglas to the meetup nabbed the suspected thief.
"It was actually just a spur of the moment idea," Douglas said of tracking down the thief on Facebook.
