A "self-proclaimed animal lover" in Des Moines, Iowa, has been charged with animal torture after allegedly hanging her boyfriend's dog in the garage.
Sheena Cornwell, 28, was arrested Saturday, according to the Des Moines Register. Her boyfriend, 32-year-old Joshua Van Dyke, told police that when he came home that evening, Cornwell was agitated and one of their dogs, a pit bull-terrier mix named Lillie, was in the garage barking.
He said Cornwell walked outside, came back five minutes later and told him, "She's gone, I killed her," according to WHO TV. The 15-year-old dog was hanging from a rafter in the garage by her leash.
Cornwell, who VanDyke said had been drinking, allegedly stated she did it because Lillie "was going to die soon anyway," according to a police report obtained by ABC News.
VanDyke told investigators that Cornwell had expressed irritation with the animal for the past couple of months, but he had never expected her to do anything violent.
Cornwell was taken to Polk County Jail, but has been released on bond.
VanDyke, who told the Register he and Cornwell have now broken up, says his ex "was a self-proclaimed animal lover. It was all she talked about, how much she loved animals."
Two other dogs, as well as several ferrets, reptiles and fish, live in the home. VanDyke told WHOTV he plans to file a restraining order because he worries Cornwell might target the other animals.
