An unplanned face-to-face encounter between Joe Carroll and Ryan Hardy on "The Following" led to an interesting comparison between the characters. Joe was struggling with the book he was writing about Ryan, and so he wanted to dig a little deeper into the mind of his subject -- while torturing a fellow agent, of course.
During their discussion, Joe posited that he had Ryan are actually very similar. This was from a story from Ryan's youth where a drug addict gunned down his father during a robbery. According to Joe, both of them were driven by death.
"It motivates you. Your every move, Ryan," Joe said. "But why? That’s what we all want to know. What did you do to deserve your place in life?"
There may have been more truth in Joe's words than even he realized. A flashback at the end of the episode revealed that it was Ryan who forced the overdose that killed the drug dealer who killed his father a few days later.
Buddy TV thought Joe was on to something as well, saying, "While Joe embraces that death, Ryan has continually tried to escape from it. Through capturing Joe initially, Ryan thought he could find some redemption, but instead he became further isolated from people."
If that is the case, then "this isn't a war between good and evil, this is a battle between the clinically insane and the slightly less crazy," according to HitFix.
The battle continues on "The Following," Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
