Walk To Work Day Makes Its San Francisco Debut (PHOTOS)

We're lean, we're green, and we've got the most attractive urban landscape of any major city in the world.

Which makes San Francisco the perfect place to host America's first "walk to work" day, happening this Friday.

A plethora of notable locals, including Mayor Ed Lee and his mustache itself, will put on their sneakers for the occasion. Of course, it wouldn't be a San Francisco holiday without a strong social media tie-in, so participants are encouraged to tweet about their experiences to win prizes and collect freebies like coffee and clipper cards.

Organized by pedestrian advocacy group Walk San Francisco, the event aims to bring awareness to the importance of street safety. This year alone, six local pedestrians have been killed in collisions.

An interactive map details the various "hubs" that walkers can convene at, and Market Street's Show Dogs will host an after-work happy hour.
