Dog Rescued From Underground Drain After Being Stuck For 4 Days (VIDEO)

Dog Rescued After Spending 4 Days Underground

For six hours, firefighters worked to cut through 8 feet of cement and steel at a car park in the U.K. In the end, the lot was destroyed, but the efforts were made worth it when Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services crew manager Pete Skinner emerged from underground with Lulu, a Jack Russel Terrier, in his arms.

The dog, rescued from a underground drain pipe Tuesday, became trapped last week after she wandered into the duct during an afternoon walk, according to local reports.

With rubble blocking her path, the dog was unable to climb back out, so owner Gina Kaiser enlisted a mechanical digger to excavate the pooch. However, when local firefighters got word of Kaiser's plan, they volunteered their services and helped rescue the dog.

"It is quite understandable that an owner, when faced with a situation like this, will want to go to extraordinary lengths to save a pet," Station Manager Doug Gruchy said in a statement posted on the Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services' website. "We took the decision to carry out this rescue because of our concern for the safety of her search party as well as for Lulu’s welfare. We are obviously delighted that it has had a happy ending."

The heartwarming story is the latest in a long line of similar dog rescues.

In December, firefighters and highway workers in Tennessee used heavy machinery to dig up a driveway to save a pit bull, that had been missing for weeks and was found trapped in a drain pipe. At the time, veterinarian Dr. Ed Lehman said dogs can survive for weeks without food, as long as they have access to water, NBC local station WBIR-TV reported.
