Tianlang Guan Surprises In Masters 1st Round: Amateur Shoots 73 At Augusta

14-Year-Old Surprises At The Masters

Perhaps the more surprising score in the first round of the Masters came from 14-year-old Tianlang Guan.

On Thursday at Augusta, the star amateur from China and the youngest player ever to compete in the Masters, shot a 73 finishing 3-over-par. That score puts Guan above Ian Poulter, Louis Oosthuizen, Hunter Mahan and even the defending champion, Bubba Watson on the leaderboard.

He finished the round in style, sinking a tough birdie putt on the 18th hole and receiving a nice ovation from the crowd.

"[Guan's] round was better than mine. That's spectacular golf," said Fred Couples after he finished 4-under, via Kyle Porter of CBS Sports.

Earlier this week, Tiger Woods, the favorite to win the 77th Masters, talked about meeting Guan when he was 12.

"To see him hit the ball out there at 12, we knew he was going to be good," Woods said, per Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports. "We didn't think he was going to be in the Masters in two years."
