Grant Smith Arrested For Attack On Two Black Golfers, Allegedly Hurled Racial Slurs

Man Arrested After Attacking Black Golfers, Shouting Racial Slurs

A Long Beach man who police said hurled racial slurs at two fellow golfers and then attacked one of them with his golf club, was arrested Thursday.

Grant Smith, 48, who police said is white, was playing golf by himself at Eisenhower Park's White Course when he came upon two male black golfers, one 65 and the other 66 years old, at the third hole and made "rude comments" to them. Police did not release the victims' names.

At the fifth hole, police said, Smith began yelling at the men and calling them "racial slurs," said police.

Smith "then struck the 65 year old victim with a golf club in the left calf, breaking off the head of the club," police said in a news release. Police said Smith threatened to stab the older golfer with his broken club. The men then called police.

Smith, who police said fled, was arrested later at his home at 242 W. Bay Dr.

He was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of second-degree menacing. Smith, who is being held in Nassau's Third Precinct, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead. ___
