Luka Magnotta Murder Trial Ordered

Posted: Updated:

MONTREAL — A former porn actor accused of dismembering his Chinese lover and mailing the body parts to political parties will stand trial on first-degree murder charges, a Canadian judge ruled Friday.

Luka Magnotta has pleaded not guilty in the slaying of Jun Lin last May. He is accused of killing the university student and posting a video online that shows him stabbing and having sex with the dismembered corpse.

A Quebec judge ruled there is enough evidence for trial. The prosecution said the trial will be in 2014.

Magnotta, 30, showed little emotion in the courtroom Friday. His lawyer had wanted the charge reduced to second-degree murder.

"We were obviously very satisfied with the court's decision this afternoon," prosecutor Louis Bouthillier said.

A trial date will be set April 29. Evidence presented at the hearing is subject to a publication ban.

Lin's father attended the preliminary hearing at times but left when the most graphic evidence was heard.

The case emerged when a package containing a severed foot was found at the headquarters of Canada's ruling Conservative Party in May 2012. That same day, a hand was discovered at a postal facility, in a package addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada.

Lin's torso was found in a suitcase at a garbage dump outside Magnotta's apartment building in Montreal.

About a week later, the missing foot and hand were found mailed to two schools in Vancouver.

Magnotta eventually was arrested in Berlin after an international manhunt.

Magnotta faces five charges in all, including defiling a corpse, threatening the prime minister, publishing obscene material and using the mail system for delivering "obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous" material.
