A Fishtail Braid For When Your Hair Is Dirty (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Not having enough time to shampoo each morning or make it to the salon before closing hours constantly leaves us with dirty hair. Three weeks' worth of dirty hair to be exact. Lived-in locks can make for some surprisingly good hair days, but we're in need of some inspiration.

While hanging out at Sally Hershberger Downtown on Monday evening, stylist Travis Speck showed us a fishtail braid hairstyle that's perfect for dirty hair.

"The idea is that it doesn't look like your typical braid and you can just work with your natural texture," Speck told us. "If your texture is a little grungy or dirty, and you don't know what to do with your hair, you can always do a braid."

By using his fingers instead of a comb to section hair before braiding, Speck played up the organic feel of this braided updo. Plus, it also cuts down on the hair tools and time needed. "Sometimes it's hard because girls want to make it look perfect," he explained. "But it's actually better when there's really no strong part. I think that's what makes it look not so done."

If you have fine or straight hair, Speck recommends using a volumizing spray like Plump Up while blow drying to thicken locks. Go over with a curling iron for an added boost.

When pinning your fishtail braids up, it's also important not to stress over making the bobby pins undetectable. "It's sort of cool to have them show," said Speck. No complaints here!
