Work continues this week on the Wells Street Bridge for the second -- and final -- phase of the 90-year-old bridge's reconstruction.

Monday morning, the Chicago Department of Transportation said via Twitter, "The new half of the Wells Street Bridge will be floated into place around 9 a.m. We'll spend the rest of day bolting it in."

CDOT has been providing ongoing updates on the work with plenty of pictures to show the progress:

Crews will work the rest of the week and through the weekend, and will remain closed to trains through early in the morning on Monday, May 6.

Once again, the majority of Brown Line trains will only go as far south as the Merchandise Mart stop, though some Brown Line trains will make all stops through Roosevelt using the Red Line tracks. Purple Line Express trains will not be in operation and the Red Line is expected to see increased crowding as a result of the closures.

In addition, track renewal work happening at the same time as the Wells Street Bridge reconstruction will impact the agency's Orange, Pink and Green Lines during the weekends.

(Visit the CTA's website for more details on impacted routes, added shuttle train and bus service and other suggested alternates.)

The first phase of service disruptions due to the bridge's closure caused some confusion and anger due to mislabeled trains and garbled train operator announcements, but the inconveniences may come as less of a surprise the second time around. Plus, the CTA Tattler blog notes, a change in morning rush hour period service for Red and Brown Line commuters should reduce confusion.

Regardless, CDOT is reiterating that the temporary pain -- namely longer travel times and more crowding -- will be worth it in the long-term.

"While train service will be interrupted, this is a great opportunity to fully restore the historic Wells Street Bridge," CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein said in a statement, according to NBC Chicago.
