La Toya Jackson has been divorced from her allegedly abusive ex-husband, Jack Gordon, for more than 14 years. In that time, she has been busy starting her life over: She's started Ja-Tail, her company with friend and business partner Jeffré Phillips, she's written a memoir and an album (both entitled "Starting Over"), she's starred on "Celebrity Apprentice" (twice), and she landed her own docu-series on OWN.
The one thing La Toya hasn't had time for is a love life. In this clip from "Life with La Toya," she reluctantly agrees to meet with mother-and-daughter matchmakers Sherri Murphy and Tammi Pickle. "This is really major, you guys!" La Toya says in the clip. "I don't have experience at dating... So I'm really nervous!"
Sherri and Tammi waste no time getting right down to business, jumping into their first question: How long has La Toya been single? The middle Jackson sister surprises the duo when she answers, "Ever since I actually got a divorce -- in '96."
La Toya recounts her experience in her marriage to her ex-husband, explaining why she has stayed away from dating for so many years. "It was a very controlling, abusive relationship," La Toya tells the matchmakers. "My husband was not a good guy. I was locked in closets. I was beaten. That's the kind of life that I led. So that's why I'm not too anxious to jump into a relationship at all."
Then comes a very important question. When Sherri and Tammi ask La Toya if she's ever been in love, she answers with a simple "no."
"It's nothing that I'm just, like, dying to do," La Toya tells them. "I'm content with my life, I'm content with who I am, but everybody keeps telling me that this is an experience in life. You don't want to miss out on it."
