Al Jazeera America announced Thursday that it is opening a bureau in Detroit ahead of the channel's scheduled launch this summer.

“We want our reporters to be where the stories are and Detroit continues to be where American business stories and trends are happening,” explained Ehab Al Shihabi, executive director of international operations for Al Jazeera, in a statement. “Al Jazeera America knows that you have to have on-the-ground reporting from the Motor City to really cover America’s economic, financial and socially important news and we’re excited about being here.”

Detroit, of course, is home to the country's largest automakers. The channel announced earlier this week that it will also be opening a Chicago bureau.

Al Jazeera America was scheduled to launch in June, though it appears that its plans may be delayed. The channel was still looking for office space in New York City earlier this month, and has yet to hire a news chief.

Al Jazeera bought Current TV in January, and announced plans to replace the channel with Al Jazeera America.
