"I promised that we would win and we have won!" Vladimir Putin shouted a little over a year ago to a crowd of supporters after winning a new term as Russia's president.
Putin was sworn in for a third term on May 7, 2012 amid widespread protests, accused of voter fraud. In the past year, the strongman has led his country with a firm hand, quelling opposition inside Russia and bristling to Western influence, including opposition to an intervention in Syria, in foreign affairs.
