Former South Carolina Democratic Chairman Dick Harpootlian tried on Tuesday to explain his recent controversial remarks about South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R), saying that Haley "needs to go back to being an accountant in a dress store."
In an interview on MSNBC, Harpootlian attempted to clarify what he meant last week when he said that Haley, a U.S. citizen whose parents are immigrants from India, should go back to "wherever the hell she came from."
"I apologized yesterday if anyone inferred -- I'm the grandson of immigrants," Harpootlian said. "She's from Bamberg, South Carolina, where she was an accountant in her parents' clothing store called Exotica."
He continued, "All I'm suggesting is she needs to go back to being an accountant in a dress store rather than being the fraud of a governor that we have."
Harpootlian has taken jabs at Haley numerous times before. In April 2012, Harpootlian compared Haley to reality stars Snooki and the Kardashians. And in September of that year, he likened Haley to Hitler's mistress, Eva Braun.
