Leonardo DiCaprio's 'Hamlet' Role May Be In The Works If Baz Luhrmann Gets His Way

Is Leo The Next 'Hamlet'?

With two days until the release of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," the eccentric director may be already planning his next project with frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio.

Luhrmann spoke to THR about what film he would like to cast DiCaprio in next, to which the director responded, "'Hamlet.'"

"To me, 'Gatsby' is the American 'Hamlet.'" Luhrmann told THR. "What else could we possibly do as a follow-up? It's just a dream at this point."

In addition to their recent "Gatsby" adaptation, Luhrmann and DiCaprio previously worked on 1996's reimagination of another classic Shakespeare tale, "Romeo + Juliet."

Similarly to "The Great Gatsby," "Hamlet" has been adapted for film multiple times, with actors including Mel Gisbon and Laurence Olivier taking on the title role.
