In an awkward encounter on The Colbert Report, Dan Brown talked about Inferno, explaining his decision to take Dante's writing as his inspiration.

"I'd never written about the literary arts.. what better piece of literature to base Inferno on? It was a thriller in its day."

Colbert told the record-breaking author that he'd read all of Brown's books. "I love the rage they fill me with," he said. "I'm definitely going to read this book. I don't think I've ever said this to a guest before."

A practicing Catholic, Colbert asked Brown, "Did you write this to familiarize yourself with where you'll be when you die?"
