Even design experts are met with a challenge every once in a while. When Maxwell Ryan, founder of Apartment Therapy, joined me on Mondays With Marlo, he told me that when he moved into his current apartment, it was a little dingy. Maxwell asked his landlord if he could make a few improvements and he got to work making a few high-impact, low-cost changes. First, he sanded, stained and refinished his floor, changing it from a mud honey color to a high-contrast deep coffee brown. In the kitchen, he replaced the countertop and the sink. Finally, he added wall-to-wall carpeting in his two bedrooms. And what a difference these small changes made!
