Thom Filicia And Architectural Digest Teamed Up With Delta Airlines To Design Sky Decks (VIDEO)

Delayed takeoffs won't seem so bad anymore.

There's nothing we love more than hopping on a plane and travelling to a new destination. But, between hauling heavy bags, long lines and security checkpoints, the airport can be a drag. That's why we were particularly excited to hear that Delta's new open-air observation decks designed by one of our all-time faves Thom Filicia opened on Friday at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Delta Airlines and Architectural Digest, who appointed Filicia to take the lead, joined forces to design these spaces as extensions to the Sky Club Lounges in both New York and Atlanta, according to The Wall Street Journal.

In a press release by the airline, Tim Mapes, senior vice president for marketing, said that these will "provide distinctive spaces with unprecedented outdoor runway views at two of the most globally significant airports in the world." Filicia explained his approach: "Amid the hustle and bustle of the airport experience, we seek to create a refuge, which represents Delta's dedication to elevated design and pays homage to an elegant lifestyle of travel and the spirit of flight."

Photos of the space reveal chic outdoor seating by JANUS et Cie, colorful area rugs by Safavieh and shade sails overhead that mimic Delta's triangular logo, according to Cool Hunting. The New York space offers views of the stunning skyline as well as the runway, and was part of a $1.4 billion expansion of Terminal Four. We're already looking for summertime flights to take advantage of the elegant lounge.
