Karl Lagerfeld is like the fashion world's loose-lipped grandfather, ready to sound off on any topic no matter the consequences. But it turns out that the designer hasn't really suffered from the backlash against his controversial quips.
"People are very nice to me, even though I'm known for saying rude things," Lagerfeld tells Madame Figaro.
The Chanel creative director sat down with the French magazine, divulging the details of his so-called "rock star status," which he says started with the popular H&M collection in 2004. "It's quite funny to have managed to become famous despite not being an actor, a singer and not being 15 years old. Not a day goes by where I don't get presents, drawings, dolls ... from fans," he says.
As beloved as Lagerfeld is, the designer has managed to upset quite a few people in the course of his career. Just last year, he called Adele "a little too fat," setting off the controversy alarms and garnering a response from the singer herself. Then there were his comments about the Middleton family (mum Carole is the "sexy" one, while Pippa "should only show her back"). Oh, and he was not a fan of Michelle Obama's bangs.
Like the Kaiser said, however, he seems to be doing just fine running his mouth as he pleases. Does Lagerfeld offend you? Or have you been desensitized to his candor?
Karl does say some strange things...
